Overall Visitor Experience

The overall visitor experience includes exposure to a comprehensive history of cultural encounters in what is now the province of KwaZulu Natal and the events that had significant contribution in shaping what is now the democratic Republic of South Africa. The history and culture that the museum embodies cuts across events and epochs from the battles of resistance and dispossession to political confrontation and alliances of the recent past as well as cross-cultural inventions, practices and achievements.

Location and Directions

uMsunduzi Museum

uMsunduzi Museum site is located in the Pietermaritzburg City centre, 45 minutes away from Durban by road, ±1hr17 min away by road to King Shaka International Airport; 1hr by air from Pietermaritzburg Airport to OR Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg); 90 minutes from the central Drakensberg resorts.

Ncome Museum

Ncome Museum is 43 km from Dundee, 24km from Nquthu and 72 km from Vryheid. En route to the Museum via De Jager’s Drift there are a number of farms including game farms, affording visitors occasional encounters with bucks, zebras and giraffes. The route via Nquthu is characterised by homesteads/imizi of mainly local AmaZulu and BaSotho people.

Entrance Fees

We charge entrance fee of R2.00 per learner and free entry to teachers accompanying learners, with a strict condition to remain with learners for the duration of the tour. The rest of the fees can be broken down as follows:
Adults: R15.00 pp
Pensioners and Students: R10.00 pp (student/pension card to be presented to qualify) Children under 16 years: R5.00 per child
School groups: Booked: R2.00 per learner free entry to teachers with the group.
Guided tour offered during weekdays on request
