Our Programmes
Exhibitions and Maintenance Department
The exhibition function exposes the public to museum content with a view to educate and inform through exhibitions, displays and publications. In tandem with exhibitions design and installation is the maintenance role which involves facilities management to ensure that not only exhibitions but all buildings are in a good state of repair and functionality. Development of resources for dissemination of marketing and programmes content, from ideation to publication, as well as branding, fall within the purview of this function.
Administration and Finance
The administration and finance function provides support to core functions. This support includes financial planning and management, human resources management and policy development and review. The quality of support rendered by this function translates into the quality of service received by our audiences, patrons and customers through core function services
Research, Information and Collections
The research, information and collection’s function entails development, preservation and promotion of the museums collections. The epicentre of this function is research aimed at knowledge production especially in a manner that contemporaneously draws meaningful parallels between the past and the present and provokes substantive engagements with heritage and history. The programme seeks to ensure open access to information and to make available resources for the benefit of the general public whom we serve. Information resources and repositories such as the library and archives, collections and publications fall within the purview of this function. Public engagement activities in the form of seminars, conferences and workshops to produce or disseminate content are organised and offered under this programme.
Education and Outreach
Education and outreach function provides general education to the public using a range of museum resources from collections to exhibitions and research output. It is within this programme that materials aligned to the school curriculum are developed and deployed with a view to provide support and complement learning and teaching in schools. This programme also provides skills development interventions to members of the community which are aimed at enhancing their abilities and chances to access income generating opportunities using acquired skills. It is also under this programme that the museum organises events to commemorate special national calendar days and initiate outreach interventions to various audience segments. A mobile museum, Nondlela, is operated under the aegis of this programme as critical element of the outreach initiatives as it facilitates taking the museum to where the audiences are located thus improving access for a cross-spectrum of audiences
